What to consider when looking for your holiday
home SB
May 2007
If you’ve set your heart on a holiday home and
you are looking at the possibilities, it’s very
easy to be carried away by seductive pictures of
enchanting cottages or luxury complexes in
sought-after areas.
But if you’re going to make the most of your
holiday home and derive the greatest
possible enjoyment from it, there are things you
need to bear in mind when deciding where to
concentrate your search.
First, it may seem obvious, but there’s not
a lot of point in choosing a holiday home at
one end of the country when you live at the
other end, however attractive a location it
may be in. If you plan to use it as a
weekend bolt-hole, it needs to be somewhere
you can get to easily on a Friday evening
after work.
Decide whether you want to use the holiday
home all year round, or just in the summer.
If you plan to use it in the winter months,
you’ll need reasonable road access. The
secluded cottage located miles up an unmade
track may seem delightful in the summer, but
on a winter’s night it won’t be so much fun.
What kind of holidays do you like? If
you’re fond of peace and quiet, you won’t
enjoy a holiday home in a complex of similar
properties, with discos and family
entertainment provided. On the other hand,
if you’re sociable and like to live it up a
bit when you’re away from work, you may find
that a hideaway in the middle of nowhere
soon loses its appeal, however charming it
may look in the photographs.
These points may seem obvious, but it’s
surprising how many people don’t take them into
account when choosing their holiday home.
Appearances aren’t everything. Buying a holiday
home is a huge commitment, so make sure you give
some thought to what you are looking for in your
holiday home. That way you can enjoy it to the
full.
