Think out of the box for your affordable holiday
home
SB May 2007
In your search for a holiday home, you may be
tempted to despair as prices already seem to be
spiralling out of your reach.
The answer is: Don’t give up. Think out of the
box and look for your holiday home in places
that haven’t yet taken off. There are still
some delightful areas where there are plenty of
properties to be found for under £200,000.
Isle of Wight. The
Isle of Wight has been a much-loved holiday
and leisure destination for many decades.
Of course it’s a paradise for those who love
anything to do with boats and sailing. But
it also has stunning scenery and historical
places of interest like Carisbrooke Castle.
What’s more it has a lively waterfront scene
with excellent restaurants, bars, cafes and
boutiques. There are plenty of ferries from
Southampton and Lymington so there’d be no
problem in getting to your holiday home.
West Wiltshire Downs. A lovely area within easy distance of London. It has
delightful market towns, enchanting villages
and a variety of prehistoric structures like
Avebury Ring. And of course there is the
wonderful cathedral city of Salisbury.
Really it is amazing that it hasn’t become a
holiday home hotspot already, but it’s only
a matter of time. Traditional holiday home
properties are already expensive, but you
can still find more modest properties for
under £200,000 – if you hurry.
Suffolk-Essex border.
This area is such a secret surprise. From
Liverpool Street to Chelmsford is only a
30-minute train ride, and within ten minutes
you are among picturesque little old
villages and ancient market towns, Constable
country and water meadows along the River
Stour. Astonishingly you can still find an
attractive holiday home here for under
£200,000 – but not for long.
Wolds.
The Yorkshire Wolds are very little known
and still a well-kept secret. But the area
is unique in its very special tranquillity
and peace – its rolling farmland, with
grazing sheep and cows, looking as if it has
slumbered for centuries. Plus it boasts
beautiful little villages and easy access to
lovely coastal towns with gorgeous sandy
beaches. The Lincolnshire Wolds is the area
known as “Tennyson country” – like the
Yorkshire Wolds it has rolling peaceful
landscape, punctuated by prehistoric remains
and lovely mediaeval churches. You can
still find a holiday home here for £180,000.
Scottish Borders.
Another one of those well-kept secrets.
People still rush through here on their way
to Edinburgh and the Highlands, yet it has
one of the most awe-inspiringly wild and
beautiful landscapes you will find anywhere,
with a uniquely mysterious quality. It’s an
ideal place for a holiday home and
properties can be found for as little as
£139,000 asking price. Some lenders south
of the Border don’t lend on
holiday homes in
Scotland, but there are those who will. So
talk to your independent
mortgage broker.
Don’t believe anyone who tells you that you
can’t afford a
holiday home any more. There are lots
of really magical spots where you can find your
own special hideaway at an affordable price.
Just keep searching.
